Former Mets pitcher Anthony Young dies at 51

Former Mets pitcher died Tuesday at 51, the organization announced on Tuesday.

According to Turk Wendell, who also pitched with the Mets during the 1990s, Young told him at the Mets’ fantasy camp earlier this season he had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.

McCaffrey was still at Stanford, which operates on a quarter system, and was unable to join the Panthers until classes finished this week.

He admitted he was nervous.

It sucks whenever your team is competing and you’re not, McCaffrey said, via the Panthers’ website. But you’ve got to follow the system, and I’m glad to be here now. Just get some jitters out and come out here and play football.

During practice, the eighth overall draft pick was watched intently by the team, media and even Panthers owner Jerry Richardson.

Afterward, McCaffrey was seen signing autographs and talking to the press.

It’s been a while, so it was good to come out here and be with the guys, McCaffrey said. I’ve been studying so hard, and today was just about playing fast.

Why he’s here: All-Star regular Chris Sale is the favorite to get the starting nod for the AL (what with McCullers’ teammate Dallas Keuchel on the DL for a while), but McCullers makes a great case to receive the honor. It’s not just that he’s been brilliant this year — you see those numbers above — but in 50 career starts, the right-hander with the filthy curve has a 3.03 ERA and 10.4 K/9 ratio.
